I think this made May so upset because August says that May feels all of other people's pain, and if she hears that a black person has been shot, she feels the pain of him, his family members and friends, and the entire civil rights community.
You have to keep in mind that Lily has only known May for a short period of time. And in that time May probably never saw, heard or felt for a story as tragic as the man in Georgia.

I think she is very sad about death because her twin died. She knows that man was good and for no good reason he was shot just like her sister no good reason why she died in her mind.
