Hey guys~when I read Chapter 5,I found something that really confuse me a lot.
In page 87,Lily says that she had never known that this was possible-to reject people for being white. From this psychological description,I learn that she always think that white people should never be discriminated. From her deep heart ,she thinks that the white people are greater than the black. Although she says that she likes to live with black people by appearance, she still has a little bit discrimination to the black people.Maybe she even didn't realize it.How do you guys think about this point?
I do believe that Lily is racist, even if she doesn't mean to be. She isn't totally in the wrong, as one never is, because her upbringing in a southern household in a southern state nurtured her into being racist. One isn't born racist. Even though I believe Lily is racist now, I also believe that Lily will soon overcome her narrow minded thinking and learn to accept all skin types due to her time with the calendar sisters.
