Lily's knowledge of the world

Lily doesn't fully understand how black people could overcome the barriers of segregation. Lily's only knowledge of a African American is of Rosaleen. Although Lily respects her she sees Rosaleen as a stereotypical African American, at the bottom of the social hierarchy.
