Put Yourself in Their Position

Hey fellow bee reading people,

With tonight's homework, one question with Chapter 5's questions really got me thinking. Number 5 asks, "What does Lily mean "Since Mr. Johnson signed the law, it was like somebody had ripped the seams right out of American life."
I understand this use of figurative language as that the law completely changed the function of Americans. They weren't used to having to give respect to blacks, and the passing of the law changed their way of living. If you were in the position, do you think that you would be able to change your actions, or would struggle to respect blacks as well. Would your life be torn apart and what do you think this quote means?

  1. Great question, Chelsea. This is a difficult question to answer. I would like to think that I would be able to adapt and move forward in the transition. I understand why this was difficult for the people at the time, however. Culture change takes time. People resist change. At this point (remember segregation was around for over 100 years), white Americans could not wrap their heads around this "new world".
