Hey y'all,
We've been reading The Secret Life of Bees, and I'm interested to hear your views on it. So far we have learned about Lily, the young protagonist with a want to fit in and a troubled past.
Here are a few questions for y'all if wanted:
1.) Will Lily's lying ever catch up to her? What consequences will she face?
2.) Do you believe Lily is racist? If so, how racist?
3.) What do some of the preludes of the chapter about the bees foreshadow to?
I would be so happy to see any answer to these questions. Until next time....

Hey Mia, to question #1 I think it will catch up her because she is every time telling that what is best for her in that moment. So once she will met two of those people which she lied and both of those people will know different ways of one same thing. I hope I answered somehow properly :).
ReplyDeleteGreat questions Mia! I agree with you Martin. To answer question 2, I think that Lily is slightly racist, but almost subconsciously. She even admits it on page 78 when she says, "I though they [blacks] could be smart, but not as smart as me, me being white." However, I don't think that this is Lily's fault, as she probably didn't even go to the same school as black kids because at this time many schools in the south weren't entirely desegregated yet.
ReplyDeleteI have this idea in my mind that someone will catch Lily on her lies and this may result in bad news. I don't think this will happen till later in the book though.
ReplyDeleteLily has always grown up in a white community with a white family. I don't necessarily believe that Lily is racist but more along the lines that she takes her "white privileges" for granted. This was supported when Lily came to August's house.
